“Rock Band” and immersive entertainment

“Rock Band” takes on “Guitar Hero”
This quote is telling:

“In 10 years people are going to look at idly listening to music the same way as we look at watching a TV show in black and white,” said Geoff Keighley, co-chair of the Game Critics Awards [...].

No, in 10 years people will be looking at music video games like we do karaoke. It’s just another way to actively participate in the media we gather, that’s all.

Passive entertainment doesn’t just disappear when you introduce immersive ones. We’re not going to substitute idle listening — humans have been doing that for centuries. If it were the case, we’d have ditched our Walkmans a long time ago to sing at home.
